The North Hills Foundation has established the Annette Lois Giovengo Music Scholarship to honor the life and legacy of a dedicated alumna, musician and advocate for education. The $500 scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating senior from North Hills High School who demonstrates excellence both academically and in the symphony orchestra.

Annette Giovengo, a 1979 graduate of North Hills High School, exemplified a lifelong commitment to learning and music. She went on to earn her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from Carnegie Mellon University, where she also continued her study of the violin. Even while pursuing her Ph.D. in history, Annette minored in violin and remained actively involved in musical ensembles. Her passion for music extended well beyond her academic career, as she continued performing in community orchestras throughout her life.

In addition to her personal achievements, Annette was a devoted supporter of the North Hills School District. She served as president of the North Hills Instrumental Parents Association and was elected to the North Hills Board of Education, where she served two terms. Throughout her service, she was a strong advocate for academic excellence and the importance of music and arts education.

The scholarship is supported by Annette's husband and son through the North Hills Foundation and seeks to recognize a student who reflects her example, balancing strong academic performance with a meaningful commitment to music.

Eligible students must have participated in the North Hills High School symphony orchestra, completed at least one Advanced Placement course with a grade of B or higher, and successfully auditioned for a PMEA district or regional orchestra or been accepted into a college program requiring an audition. Applicants are also required to submit a brief essay reflecting on what they will take away from the North Hills School District music program.

The application deadline for 2026 is April 24. In future years, the deadline will be April 15. The awardee will be announced at the high school’s annual Senior Awards Night on May 18.

Through this scholarship, the North Hills Foundation continues to celebrate the lasting impact of music education and honor Annette Giovengo’s legacy by supporting students who share her dedication to both academics and the arts.
